Wild Free: Unleashing the Power of Expression through Akira Tang’s Bold Art

At Woollieemix, we believe that art is a powerful medium for self-expression, especially for those who feel constrained by societal pressures, technology, or even their own inner struggles. Our Wild Free series, designed by the incredibly talented Akira Tang, is a testament to this belief.Akira Tang brings a unique perspective to his art. His work is unconventional, raw, and deeply personal—reflecting his own journey as well as the struggles of those seeking to break free from societal, technological, and even spiritual chains.

Akira's Journey: A Loss, A Connection, and A New Beginning

In July 2019, Akira experienced a personal tragedy that would change the course of his creative journey. His mentor, Mr. Cain, passed away, leaving Akira feeling as though he had lost a part of himself. In his own words, it was as if he had lost an arm—something integral to his being. For months, Akira found himself in a limbo, unsure of how to continue. He felt disconnected from his art, from his purpose, and from the world around him. But then, in 2020, something extraordinary happened. Through a strange and unexpected connection, Akira received a rough, chaotic sketch from his late teacher—delivered to him through a mysterious intermediary. The sketch was messy, almost incomprehensible, but Akira believed that everything happens for a reason. He knew this was a message, though he didn’t immediately understand it.The second image you see here is that very sketch—the one that sparked something deep inside Akira. At first, he didn’t know what to do with it. He was still in a state of aimlessness, spending his days playing and disengaging from the creative process. But the sketch stayed with him, and he began to wonder: Was Mr. Cain urging him to continue exploring the concept of structure, a topic they had often discussed during his mentor's lifetime?

The Birth of a New Artistic Vision

Determined to make sense of the chaotic sketch, Akira began to experiment. He started with pixels—an element he had never worked with before. The low-resolution, gear-like appearance of digital pixels intrigued him, as he saw in them the idea of disconnected structures—much like the fragmented world he was living in.This experimentation led to the creation of his first piece in the Wild Free series: a pixelated version of neurons, representing both the chaos and the complexity of the human mind. The third image you see here is part of that creation—the neurons, tangled and sprawling, represent the intricate inner workings of thought, memory, and emotion. Through this piece, Akira began to explore the concept of broken connections, both in the digital world and in human consciousness.

But Akira didn’t stop there. As he delved deeper into this new creative process, he began to construct an entire world—a fantasy realm that reflected his growing disillusionment with reality. This world was full of chaotic, dystopian structures, a reflection of the dirty, flawed, and broken aspects of the real world. The fourth image is a snapshot of this dystopian universe, a place where the lines between human and machine blur, and where the corruption of society is laid bare for all to see.

The Wild Free Series: Art as a Voice for the Voiceless

In 2022, Akira's path crossed with that of Woollieemix’s founder, Eddie. Eddie saw potential in Akira’s work—potential to give a voice to those who feel trapped, those who are screaming to break free from the constraints of society, technology, and even their own minds. Eddie knew that Akira’s bold, unfiltered art could become a channel for people to express their deepest frustrations and longings. And so, the Wild Free series was born.Through Akira’s signature pixelated and abstract art style, the Wild Free collection captures the essence of rebellion, freedom, and raw emotion. It’s more than just a series of designs—it’s a movement. Every piece in the collection represents a powerful message: a call to break free from the chains that bind us, whether they be societal expectations, technological dependencies, or internal struggles.
